Does Screen Resolution Actually Matter at Your Distance?
The human eye has a limit to how much detail it can resolve. Beyond a certain distance, a 4K image and a 1080p image are visually identical โ so buying a more expensive 4K TV may not be worth it if you sit too far away.
How the Calculation Works
The tool uses the ratio of viewing distance (m) รท screen diagonal (inches) compared against empirically-derived thresholds from human visual acuity studies:
- Ratio โค 0.039 โ 4K Ultra HD is perceptibly better than 1080p
- Ratio โค 0.060 โ 1080p Full HD is the sweet spot
- Ratio โค 0.110 โ 720p HD is sufficient
- Ratio > 0.110 โ 480p SD โ all resolutions look the same
Typical Home Setups
The average living room sofa is 2.5โ4m from the TV. For a 55" TV at 3m, the optimal resolution is 1080p โ 4K adds no visible benefit. For 4K to matter on a 55" screen, you'd need to sit within about 2.1m.
US vs UK Note
TV size is always measured diagonally in inches. Viewing distance is typically measured in meters in Europe and feet in the US โ use the unit toggle above to switch.
